I've been reading She's Kind of a Big Deal that I was pleasantly surprised to see today's Google feature was on Martha Graham, dancer and choreographer, another awesome lady that I'd never heard of before. And the animation for this occasion is AWESOME. (Warning, I can't view vids at work so I simply yanked the first video off Google's results.)

We need to learn more about these awesome role models yo!

Today's question: 16. What are you glad you did but haven't really had a chance to post about?

In quick point form:

1) My Sydney trip (still collating photos, but I think I'm more or less done).

2) The AMV I did

3) Reactions to Puella Magi Madoka Magica Eps 4 and 5

4) Drinking of awesome bubble tea, including Yakult flavoured bubble tea

5) Yesterday night's outing, which included okonomiyaki, half-price desserts, anime geeking and debates on whether we and/or various anime characters would contract with Kyuubei.

(Current status on anime characters contracting with Kyuubei:
Contract - Most of the Bleach cast
Not contract - All the good guys in Ruroni Kenshin

YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR MY POST TO FIND OUT WHY.)

There were too many sweets in this episode.

Spoilers will tell you why )

A bit of episode 4 and triggery stuff )

I now can't stop crying when I listen to the ending theme. Do listen - it's a very epic song even when it's not the full version.

Against my better judgement, I popped in episode 2 of Puella Magi Madoka Magika last night.

Last night's serving of Madoka Magika was a cappuccino and it kept me awake )

In conclusion: I better save the next few episodes for the weekend. Lack of sleep is not so great at work!

So someone said that May was Magic Girl Month (not sure where I saw it). Since I like my magic girls, I thought it'd be nice to do something for it. But I wasn't sure what to post about. Princess Tutu? Card Captor Sakura? Something else?

Then I remember that I'd seen [livejournal.com profile] the_firefly watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica. And it seemed to be the latest anime to rave about. Keeping in mind all the buzz about how dark it could get, I popped in the first episode to watch before bed last night.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is like... blackforest cake. It's dark, rich, and probably not something that you should eat before bed. Cut into the cake for spoilers! )

But! I didn't have any nightmares so I guess it's fine. Not quite sure I should push my luck by watching the rest of the episodes before bed though. ^^ I'm only through episode 1!

Also - I am an Akemi Homura fangirl! *eeeeeeeeeeee*

I went to watch Inception yesterday, which I would have done soon or later because I am big on the dream hopping thing (had an OC based entirely around that concept). My general reaction can be summed up as thus:

- Awesome despite being confusing
- Guys, guys, whose mind do I have to hack in order to get some Eames/Arthur/Ariadne fic??? Because HOT DAMN. (And no, I do not want to write it myself, I have 39 items on my list *weeps*)

We return to your regular schedule of the writing meme.

Days 1 to 14 )

15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!

Diane Duane and PTerry, hands down. While I've only followed one series of each (So You Want to be a Wizard and Discworld), these authors have been the most consistent in writing characters and stories I adore. I've copied the most quotes from these two authors.

What do I admire about them? Diane Duane I admire for the images that she paints with words. In her first book, she wrote about a freaking Apocalypse, and still made it beautiful. She also makes the reader care about her characters. E.g. Fred! FRED ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY omg. She's also the only author who excels in describing both technology and nature without sounding stilted in one or the other. I also was very impressed by her description of the Fair Folk (even if the other stuff in the book made me raise an eyebrow, but still).

PTerry I admire for his humour. It's so much a part of his universe (Discworld is a flat world borne by 4 elephants on a tortoise moving through space!) that it lends itself easily to parodies and amusing descriptions. Also because I have a deep abiding love for Death and Susan. Omg. <3 Thief of Time is still my favouritest story EVAR. like EVAR. *sighs happily*

I have no excuse. OK maybe I do - I am kinda sick right now - but I had ready made stuff! That I could have posted in a heartbeat!

Instead I got myself an earworm in the form of Zui Xiang Nian De Ji Jie (最想念的季节) by Pin Guan (品冠). I heard it on the radio, and bam! it started to haunt me. I hit up the lyrics, found it was a cover of a Japanese song (Kaze by Kobukuro, if you wanna know) and listened to it n times... and it still wouldn't leave my head!

So I did what one does in this sort of situations - I made an AMV to it. With Macross Frontier, because that show is so easy to vid to. I made this particular AMV in WMM in about... 1 day? Maybe less?

Warnings for: WMM made movie, spoilers for the second half of Macross Frontier (ep 13 onwards), lots of Alto/Ranka

A surprise viewing of Iron Man 2 today has me rolling around and making ridiculous noises that sound like squee. The only thing that could possible make me love Iron Man 2 better if it were actually Iron Man 3.

Spoilers will tell you why )

tl;dr version
Before knocking down all their pillars from the first movie in this one, the creators really should have considered another version of the movie that cemented those pillars further before going with the final version of Iron Man 2.

Because of Iron Man 2, I have a couple of more posts in my head: The New Heroine and her influence on the New Hero, and some fuck yeah she's awesome posts for Pepper Potts (of course!) and Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson). Sorry Lily and Severus, you guys have to wait.

Who?
Lietenant Uhura is the chief communications officer on the USS Enterprise from the series Star Trek. She's also a BAMF, holds her own on a male-dominated bridge and is generally awesome all around.

What makes her so awesome?
Admittedly, the Uhura I'm familiar with is the movie version, so the squee is based on that. =)

- She owns her intro scene
Major props to the movie guys on this one. Her scene starts in the movie with her moving her way through the bar, and we can tell she's in her element. She moves easily through the crowd, whether it's by dodging people, or by a friendly smile and greeting. She's surrounded by people she identifies with - people from Starfleet.

Then she orders her drinks and we know she's popular, if that's the size of the crowd she's hanging out with. And has a pretty good memory - she easily rattles off the list, and makes additions of her own.

And then, and only then, we meet Jim Kirk. We don't need Jim Kirk to get to know Uhura - she can make her entrances on her own.

- She's smart
The movie has Uhura talking about intercepting Klingon transmissions - while in her underwear admittedly, but Hollywood aside - given that Klingons are the big bads of the universe at this particular moment, she shows she not only knows Klingon but is able to decrypt what are essentially wartime transmissions for fun. I don't want to come across her when she's at her work.

By the way, the work of a communication officer? Is REALLY HARD. I had the benefit of doing a NASA simulation on a class trip, and I was the communications officer during that simulation. Although we had a team of four, the sheer volume of messages meant that we were never free. (And I was told off for typing up messages during the landing sequence - but I had a backlog!) And when we were hit by various failures in the space shuttle, we had to prioritise messages, as well as ensure that everyone had the info they needed to tackle whatever crisis was facing them.

Which makes me think that Uhura is really smart to both qualify and hold her position as chief communications officer. Not to mention she's on the Enterprise with Kirk, where everyday could be emergency day. =)

- She's not afraid to show what she knows
This is a personal thing - I myself am pretty shy so I admire those who speak up about themselves. Uhura definitely does that, with the confidence of one who knows that she deserves to be heard too. She's not afraid to tell Kirk she's not interested and that her drink is on her. She's not afraid to tell Spock that she deserves her place on the Enterprise. And she's not afraid to upstage her own chief communications officer (who probably outranks her in title and experience) because she DOES know all three dialects of Romulan and is more qualified for the job than her then-boss.

This extends to personal relationships too - she's not afraid to tell Spock that he can tell her what he needs from her to ease his sorrow - and to respect him when he says what he needs is for everyone, including her, to continue performing admirably. =)

Where do I find fic on dw???
A Visit to the Previous Generation by [personal profile] helens78
Uhura and Spock visit Uhura's grandmother. I thought this was a lovely take on several aspects: Uhura from the 2009 movie and how she could develop further, the Uhuras from the 2009 movie and TOS, and of course Nichelle Nichols. =)

Lager, Never Even Regal by [personal profile] asimaiyat
Uhura knows exactly what she wants, including her drinks, the company she keeps and which award events to walk out on

And Uhura is so awesome that she even has her own comm: [community profile] awesomeuhura. Includes fic and other stuff.

[community profile] three_weeks_for_dw mentioned a lack of squee, which made me jump up and down and go "I got squee! I have lots of it!" Ask and you shall receive. Several posts of it in fact =)

Although Star Trek XI is not THE fandom I'm in, but it is the fandom that got me into Dreamwidth, and so I have to start with it first.

How I got to know about it
I watched Star Trek in May 2009 last year as someone who had never watched Star Trek before - at all. I was a firm Star Wars fan, and Star Trek to me was something I was aware of but wasn't too sure what it was about. Then my f-list exploded with OMG STAR TREK 2009 is so awesome, and I had to check it out.

OMG STAR TREK 2009 IS SO AWESOME

What I like about it

- OPENING SCENE THAT MADE ME CRY
I - I know it was over-dramatic and len flarey and all but GEORGE KIRK. SACRIFICING HIMSELF FOR HIS CREW. Winona Kirk reminding that he should be there for them, as she should! And poor baby Kirk not knowing his daddy!

- Kid!Spock
Actually Spock in all flavours, but kid!Spock is particularly cute. He was all stoic in a way that made me want to pinch his cheeks, and made me fond of grown-up!Spock even when his Vulcan upbringing made him be an asshole. (I - I wanted to pinch his cheeks even then too.)

- McCoy
This is something I only picked up on the rewatch (too busy being DAZZLED by Spock the first time) but when McCoy/Karl Urban said to Kirk "I may throw up on you" my heart fluttered. And continued to do so each time he spoke. I SUSPECT MY BODY IS TRYING TO CONVINCE MCCOY TO GIVE ME (medical) ATTENTION.

- Awesome people being awesome
What I love about Star Trek is everyone showing competence at whatever they do. Yes they may mess up along the way, but eventually they all come round to FULFIL THEIR DUTY. And it's not just restricted to the dudes too!

- An ending that also opens up POSSIBILITIES
I love it when movies successfully end the story, but remind the audience that the possibilities for the characters after the movie are still wide open. Star Trek does this by having the characters save the day, get their positions and then proceed to GO BOLDLY WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE.

Where to find fic???
Fic for Star Trek XI was really the reason why I stumbled upon and grew to love dreamwidth. I first found my fic from the Star Trek tag on delicious. The Star Trek tag is generic enough so you can soak up both the original series and the new movie, but you can find more specific tags under related tags.

Then I found out about dreamwidth's site and journal search. You can find it under the explore set of links, and I've found it invaluable for digging up fannish stuff to read on dreamwidth. The tag cloud in the latest things feed is also very useful!

Here are some of the fics on dreamwidth that I've dug up from the sources above:

How to Win Friends and Influence Vulcans by [personal profile] green
Kirk tries to make friends. Too bad recipient of said friendship is Spock.

The Word for World Is -- by [personal profile] laurajv
A sad, heart-string pulling look at the Vulcan colony, after the ashes of a planet have been laid to rest.

Fine, Dammit!
Everyone thinks McCoy has been mindraped by mirror-verse Spock and is suppressing. McCoy is annoyed and lulz are had.

Singer of the Deep
It turns out that humans know more about Vulcan fauna than the Vulcans do.

And one more:
The 80/20 Theory As Applied to Cats on the Bed
This doesn't quite count because it's a fake-cut to LJ, but how can you resist a Kirk that sleep-walks to warm places (namely Spock's room) in his sleep??

The creative dilemma last week resolved itself after the girls and I watched Iron Man - I ended up making a Iron Man MV to Kanye West's Stronger. And am still making it, since I'm on a tricky bit where Kanye changed the rhythm and I have to trim scenes to fit. I realised that vid making seems easy, but because there are images and sound and pacing there are a lot of fiddly bits that can go wrong. And status updates on vid making are super boring. Who wants to hear stuff like "I conquered the second verse!" and "Never thought I'd say this: needs more Iron Man blowing stuff up" anyway? =P

Also sorry Lady Gaga, but I disagree with you and think Bad Romance's vid is greater than Telephone's vid. Telephone's vid is clearly in the wrong category, it should be under short film or porno.

Now to see if I can actually knuckle down long enough to get a headstart on lyric icons.

There have been too many posts rattling around my head, so I thought I'd do a point post where I cover all of them briefly.

- I'll only post from Dreamwidth (dw) from now onwards, but I'll crosspost entries on life and fannish squee. And probably Bleach fic. Once I untangle my head, I'll be getting a paid account and reading the lj f-list from dw too. Don't worry, the f-locked stuff is safe, and you can read why with this unofficial handy guide

- Again, if anyone wants dw codes, just holler - I still have a few.

- Sometime during a group movie watching with Mari and Ten last last weekend, I ended up falling in love with Star Trek again. Only this time, it's not a hot Vulcan that's taking up the headspace, but a grouchy doctor. *sighs dreamily over McCoy and his voice*

- Unfortunately, my love for McCoy didn't prevent me from being temporarily distracted by Kayla Silverfox from the Wolverine movie (which is a bad movie with an awesome story). Because Kayla Silverfox is exactly the type of character I like to write - a person who builds an exterior of lies and questionable morals in order to protect her tender heart. Alas, there are only so many hours in a day.

- I've been using most of those hours to read Star Trek movie fanfic. Where I KEEP TRIPPING OVER THE SLASH. Now I love slash and would probably ship Kirk/Spock like burning if not for the fact that no one has successfully managed to break up Spock/Uhura without STABBING MY HEART INTO A MILLION PIECES.

- So I decided to coin the term BFFB, which stands for Best Friends Forever with Benefits. Because who says you have to give up romance for bromance or vice-versa? A HEART HAS MANY ROOMS FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOVING.

- Which is totally exemplified by Batman and Spiderman in the Marvel/DC review/parody videos by ItsJustSomeRandomGuy. Slash googles set off while watching Batman declare he's gonna help Spiderman remember his marriage? OMG THERE'S HET IN MY SLASH! THEY MUST BE BFFB!

- So yeah, Kirk/Spock are BFFB in my universe. And Kirk/McCoy. Even though I find the majority of Kirk/McCoy too fluffy.

- However, in a Star Trek Alternate Reality fic I may or may not be writing, I've got Kirk/McCoy overtures and fluff. Although the Kirk/McCoy is angsty and the fluff is actually for the McCoy/Chapel. (Yes yes I whore out the characters I love. SHUSH. Especially you Ichigo. XD)

- Again with the movies: I went out with ex-classmates to watch Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief today. It put in mind a comment that I'd read about how special effects have increased by a million times, but acting has degraded by just as much. Either that or scriptwriters are getting worse, the ex-classmates and I haven't decided. For example, chemistry between characters is not enhanced by the line - "I have strong feelings for you. I haven't decided if they're positive or negative."

- Ex-classmates proved their awesomeness during chat over McDonalds' sundaes by talking about, in no particular order: whether guns or swords were more practical for demigods living in modern times, bad movie plots, how bad the Twilight movie and books were, arguments of what elements a Japanese manga should have (One of the suggestions: at least one betrayal and one death), what sort of teachers one should date, gossip about mutual friends

- Experiencing ennui due to me doing the same old things while everyone else seems to be changing. That having been said though, I want to paraphase a post from my f-list that has since disappeared - "it may not be the best, but it's enough". And that's really the way I feel.

But should that be the way things are?

Once upon a time, my friend [personal profile] tenebris made a kick-ass verse called Covert, which in her words is "kinda Mission Impossible (IMF), kinda James Bond". Operatives in Covert tend to work in pairs, where the partner responsible for the offensive is called "Dagger" and the partner responsible for defensive or background work is called "Sheath". The best analogy for Sheath would be handler.

Here are some short snippets from my playtime in her world.

I may have stopped to watch this Iron Man trailer each time I saw it posted. EACH TIME.

Cut in case Iron Man AWESOMENESS is too much for you )

In other news I may be running to DW permanently, once I figure out whether I want to out the linkage between my LJ and my DW. Whether I like it or not my LJ has some baggage that I really don't want to bring with me, which is why I f-lock the DW posts. On the other hand, I HATE completely f-locked LJs with a passion, which is what would happen if I keep up the current arrangement. So we'll see which desire wins out in the end.
