I haven't commented on Taylor Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, because I know it has to come with a lot of backstory and caveats.

The summary of the backstory is this: I have been sitting with various forms of grief since 2019, and you'd think after five years, I know the shape of my grief. I have lived with it for all this time, because I cannot help but be aware of it.

You might want to mock my way of working with it, which is to write an entire novel about a crossover pairing that can probably be distilled down to a single chapter. But I know it's what I needed at the time (and maybe still do now).

That's why while I get some of the critique of The Tortured Poets Department, I cannot mock it. There are certain tracks - Down Bad, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart - that have captured my grief in a way that I never expected anyone to get. And those two tracks alone, for better or for worse, bring me back to my grief.

This is coming from someone who, when she first heard the album, made the complaint that it's too much like Midnights. But even if I don't agree with some of Taylor's sonic decisions, I can respect it. I can't throw stones, given the way I have chosen to express myself via niche fic.

But it's still disheartening to see critique of the album from people who haven't cared to listen to it (because Taylor Swift has a reputation) or who twist it to fit a certain perspective (because Taylor Swift has a reputation). Even if this particular album isn't the shape of their grief (and I genuinely hope that they never experience it), I feel that there isn't enough grace given to allow people to have other experiences, or forms of expression, or even to allow this album to just exist. And that's too bad.

THIS IS WHAT [livejournal.com profile] tenebris AND I GET UP TO IN OUR SPARE TIME. BECAUSE WE CAN.

TO THE TUNE OF RIHANNA'S SHUT UP AND DRIVE. BECAUSE WE CAN. SHUT UP.

I've been looking for a story that is qualified
If that bunny is the one, gotta sit down and write
I'm a fine-tuned canon loving plot machine
With a pimp laptop and my words so keen

So if you feel me let me know, know, know
Come on now what you waiting for, for, for
My keyboard's ready to do prose, prose, prose
So start me up and watch me go, go, go, go

Write out where your plot should go if you know what i mean
Got a hero and a villain that is sly and mean
Can you handle plot twists? Can you stay up all night?
If you can baby boy then we can go and write

Cos I'm 0 to 750 in three point five
Baby you got the story -

Now shut up and write

I got prose like an award winning novelist
And my wordplay'll hit you like a fist
You seem like you can handle my metaphors
You keep shootin' for the goal, but you can't score

So if you feel me let me know, know, know
Come on now what you waiting for, for, for
My keyboard's ready to do prose, prose, prose
So start me up and watch me go, go, go, go

Get you where you want to go, if you know what I mean
'Cause my plotting's smooth and I'm a dialogue queen
Can you handle my tricks? Can you take all the sparks?
If you can, baby boy, meet me after dark

Cos I'm 0 to 750 in three point five
Baby you got the story -

Now shut up and write

I might not look it, but once upon a time I was a classical geek. Even on my recent Sydney trip, when I heard the orchestra tuning up in the concert hall I was all ;_;

It's rather surprising though that Puella Magi Madoka Magica is rekindling this love for orchestra pieces. There's a professional violinist in the show, but he doesn't get to perform much. Moreover, his pieces don't make me long for more. I consider good music as something you feel in your soul.

This has been happening with the fan adaptation of the PMMM soundtrack. There's this piece called the Oktavia, which I usually like better as a string orchestra version. However, this is the only version that gave me heebe jeebes even though I wasn't paying attention to it. It was a piece I could feel in my soul.

CHILLS MAN. CHILLS.

That's not the only piece though! There's another series of orchestra adaptations that includes my fave piece: Magia, the ending theme for the show. It's a hard song to get right, but these fans did it - enough brass, woodwind at the soaring bits and yet still managed to include the bells. EPIC, REALLY EPIC. Their take on the opening, Connect, was pretty good too!

In conclusion: WANT TO HEAR ORCHESTRA MUSIC SO MUCH RIGHT NOW.

And hopefully DW will not eat my youtube vids again...

Quite by accident, I stumbled upon a song that I've had in my folder for ages, but only really heard today. It's called I've Been Lured by Brown Bird. The lyrics are intriguing, but no one has put up a definitive copy. So I wrote down what I heard for my own record.

I was rereading my PMMM reaction posts, and realised that in my last post, I said "If you value your sanity (and your eyes), don't". Which sounded like I was telling you guys not to watch the last 3 episodes.

That wasn't what I meant at all! I love this show! I only meant that watching the last 3 eps all at once is killer on the emotions. ;_;

In fact, I love this show/Homura so much that I made an FST. With all female singers to boot.

Time After Time - A Homura FST

What's the time? )

Hope you enjoy the FST! Maybe when I am brave enough I will post it to the PMMM comm. >_>

Lately I've been introduced to a lot of awesome things, so I thought that I should share with everyone!

1) Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hallowd I have been reading Scandinavia and the World. Think Hetalia, only modern day. And focused on European countries. And OWNS its biases.

Especially since it centers around the three Scandinavian countries - Sweden, Norway and Denmark. It's IN THE NAME, DUH.

2) This MV rocks because it wasn't shot with a video cam. It was spliced from over 15,000 photos! Just watch, it's AMAZING.

3) It's the time of year for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000. How does it work? Sign up by 30 Dec, get your pic, and write exactly 1000 words on it. The pics are given by theme, and this year's theme is DRESSED TO THE NINES. Isn't that awesome? Due dates are also more of a guideline than a deadline, so no pressure there.

(Hint: SIGN UP. It's FUN!)

The creative dilemma last week resolved itself after the girls and I watched Iron Man - I ended up making a Iron Man MV to Kanye West's Stronger. And am still making it, since I'm on a tricky bit where Kanye changed the rhythm and I have to trim scenes to fit. I realised that vid making seems easy, but because there are images and sound and pacing there are a lot of fiddly bits that can go wrong. And status updates on vid making are super boring. Who wants to hear stuff like "I conquered the second verse!" and "Never thought I'd say this: needs more Iron Man blowing stuff up" anyway? =P

Also sorry Lady Gaga, but I disagree with you and think Bad Romance's vid is greater than Telephone's vid. Telephone's vid is clearly in the wrong category, it should be under short film or porno.

Now to see if I can actually knuckle down long enough to get a headstart on lyric icons.
