So here's my ART Week 2 round up, a few days late. I wanted to say RL blinded me with SCIENCE, but actually it just blindsided me in the latter half of the week, which made it impossible to get into the proper mindset for writing Iroh. Still managed to get 800 over words from him, so I'm still counting that as a triumph

I also pecked a little at Lunar Eclipse and Sam/Faye, and that's the real reason why I can announce my total word count as 1,234 words (I KID YOU NOT), which works out to an average of 205 words over 6 days.

Ten assigned me a penance prompt anyway, and I nattered at voices in my head for 500 over words. WISH ME LUCK IN WRITING MORE STUFF! =D

In the meantime, writing meme!!

Days 1 to 17 )

18. Favorite antagonist and why!

Is it cheating if I say Hollow Ichigo from Bleach? =) In a way it is, because Hollow Ichigo is basically the evil version of the main character of Bleach. Only you know, he's in Ichigo's head. And is a source of power he badly needs in order to win his current fights.

What makes him my favourite is that he's a physical manifestation of all the dark parts of the hero that make him who he is. To me, he isn't some bad guy that is simply defeated, or that Ichigo can run away from. He IS Ichigo, he IS the hero, if the hero is allowed to be petty and hurtful and not care about who he hurts.

I'm also a big fan of storylines where the hero isn't perfect and has to accept his imperfections. Right now Ichigo is so far on the other spectrum of accepting this that it isn't funny. And that's part of the reason why Lunar Eclipse keeps bugging my brain - I want Ichigo and his internal antagonist to work together. They're literally two sides of the same coin. Which means that Hollow Ichigo keeps bugging my head, and I have to like him. *grins*

Also, on a completely shallow front, I find him cute. =D

17. Favorite protagonist and why!

Note: for the next three questions I'll be answering this in terms of the series I write fanfic for, as opposed to characters in my own stories.

The easier answer would be Rukia from Bleach, but as you all know she's my favourite character to write, so that would be just repeating myself. Instead I'll talk about Harry Potter and how he captured the imagination of myself (and plenty of my friends).

Harry Potter babble )

Too bad I don't write more HP fanfic, other than the stories for my friends. =)

So I don't have an ART challenge summary for last week.

Correction, I don't have an ART challenge summary for last week YET because in 3 days I watched two movies, had two 10 course dinners and one class gathering. I don't THINK I've made the wordcount, but as the post title says, I REGRET NOTHING.

WHY NO REGRETS? )

Also if you are in Singapore, and like miniature food, Takashimaya is selling Megahouse sets for $25, which is seriously cheap considering a) they usually sell for $85, and b) some of these sets are old and might be discontinued! In addition to the two sets I bought, I saw more cakes, a dog cafe, ice cream and candy.

And now to bloat this up further, WRITING MEME.

Days 1 to 15 )

16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how “far” are you willing to go in your writing? ;)

*wry* Do I ever! I think I do pretty well with those, for all that I like writing couples too emotionally constipated to really be open about their relationship. It mostly works because even if they aren't romantically involved in canon, they have a deep enough bond to bring them into close contact and have sufficient rapport to build a possible relationship. It does however make the regular dating milestones kind of hard, since my characters have an atypical relationship to begin with. It's part of why I wrote Swallowing Hot Chocolate - I wanted Ichigo and Rukia from Bleach to do normal stuff, but they're so far out of normal that it... almost doesn't work. *grins*

How far? ha ha ha I write married couples does that count??? Oh that's not what you're talking about? *grins* I'm not a shrinking violet - I started out with yaoi when I was 13, so norms don't really bother me. I'm usually more worried about whether it is something that the character would do, and when you have a largely asexual boy who's afraid of boobs (I'm looking at you Ichigo) there is pretty much a challenge there. But I'm also weak to the hot, so that challenge is something I'm willing to handle. Also I stalk kink memes.

But I also have to admit that apart from the physical aspect I also like my characters to get emotionally close. I'm personally a fan of the soulmates concept in fic, although when it comes to real life I'm a lot more iffy on it.

I went to watch Inception yesterday, which I would have done soon or later because I am big on the dream hopping thing (had an OC based entirely around that concept). My general reaction can be summed up as thus:

- Awesome despite being confusing
- Guys, guys, whose mind do I have to hack in order to get some Eames/Arthur/Ariadne fic??? Because HOT DAMN. (And no, I do not want to write it myself, I have 39 items on my list *weeps*)

We return to your regular schedule of the writing meme.

Days 1 to 14 )

15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!

Diane Duane and PTerry, hands down. While I've only followed one series of each (So You Want to be a Wizard and Discworld), these authors have been the most consistent in writing characters and stories I adore. I've copied the most quotes from these two authors.

What do I admire about them? Diane Duane I admire for the images that she paints with words. In her first book, she wrote about a freaking Apocalypse, and still made it beautiful. She also makes the reader care about her characters. E.g. Fred! FRED ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY omg. She's also the only author who excels in describing both technology and nature without sounding stilted in one or the other. I also was very impressed by her description of the Fair Folk (even if the other stuff in the book made me raise an eyebrow, but still).

PTerry I admire for his humour. It's so much a part of his universe (Discworld is a flat world borne by 4 elephants on a tortoise moving through space!) that it lends itself easily to parodies and amusing descriptions. Also because I have a deep abiding love for Death and Susan. Omg. <3 Thief of Time is still my favouritest story EVAR. like EVAR. *sighs happily*

14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?

I don't. Although I can read maps (something that I'm very proud of) I don't really draw maps. Besides, all my fics have been pretty concentrated in one locale, so I haven't had the need for maps. That doesn't mean I don't know how to appreciate them though! Besides, other people draw maps for the fandoms that I am in, so why do I need to draw maps for myself.

The only exception, I think, has been the flat of one of my OCs. It was kind of necessary because I needed to know where the doors were in relation to everything else. Also because I like to read Ikea magazines, and the latest version I read had a bitching kitchen island. Which tempted me to put one in the apartment of my OC - I could imagine my OC having something like that in her studio apartment, where she'd sit and watch the news while eating her breakfast. It makes sense, she doesn't need a table since she doesn't have many guests over.

But a kitchen island isn't common, and the mental image above implies that there isn't a solid wall between the hall and the kitchen. So mental mapping it was. I'm not too sure if such a flat can exist though, but hey it's in my head. =D

13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?

Hmmm. This is not actually something I'm aware of, as I write to the fandom, not the culture. And since I've been following Western and Japanese animation, it kind of follows that I'd write for those two cultures. Do I like either of them over the other? No, not really. So in that sense, I don't have a favourite to write - it's just there and it's something that I have to do research on.

If you're asking me which comes easier, admittedly it's Western culture. The media here is chockful of it that it's pretty hard to avoid and even easier to research. Japanese culture has definitely become more accessible, but not as much. In addition, I find I have a pretty bad habit of trying to superimpose my own culture onto it, which is wrong wrong wrong.

I guess the final answer is: I've no preference.

12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?

Unfortunately, the story I did the best on worldbuilding was one that I spent too much time on worldbuilding and not enough on actual writing, so I guess I'll have to tell you about it. =D

Red!AR is an alternate reality (AR) based on this chapter cover for Bleach. [personal profile] tenebris and I were pondering over why Ichigo wore gloves (he had been wearing gloves for a couple of covers now), and I specced a fantasy world around the reason - he has to keep his dark side in. Which evolved into how Ichigo got his dark side, and the answer became blood rituals and his mom dying in a magic circle, and then the rest of Red!AR came naturally.

So! A short version - the guys in that image are all mercenaries, each with their own magic. Which is pretty wide-ranging, almost X-men like in the range. We've got elementals - ice (Hitsugaya), fire (Ichigo and Renji) and earth (Chad), we've got people with outrageous powers like luck (Ikkaku), and we've got Ishida, who is like an apothecary and a pyrotechnics expert all in one. Oh yeah, and we've got fucked up - when Ichigo takes off his gloves, people die.

They work for this pretty seedy guy called Urahara, taking on any jobs that comes their way. Occasionally, that means running errands for Matsumoto, who's a goddess avatar. In this particular world, goddesses (and gods, but we don't see as many in this story) walk the earth through humans (aka avatars) that channel them. As far as goddesses go, Matsumoto's goddess is pretty minor. The major goddess has two avatars - Rukia and Orihime. Rukia channels the dark side of the goddess, Orihime the light side.

As with any verse that has multiple goddesses/gods, someone's always not happy that the lead goddess is the lead goddess, which means that goddesses and gods take sides, and sometimes humans are caught in the clashes in between.

Otherwise it's your pretty run of the mill fantasy - villages, taverns, festivals, plots to kill goddess avatars - oops! did I say the last part aloud? *wink*

I really hope to stop plotting this AR and actually write it someday.

11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
Rukia from Bleach hands down. She's both complex and easy to write for me - complex enough that I can do pretty interesting things with her in a storyline, and easy enough that I don't get frustrated when writing those complex topics. She's also well placed for a narrator - she's a shinigami, which means that she understands the spirit world, she stayed in the living world the longest out of the characters I like to write, which means that I can put her in almost any setting, and she's close to Ichigo, which is the other character I like to write about. Oh, and she's a girl. =)

Disclaimer before I go into my least favourite character - I am talking about the perspective of a writing on ease of writing, not so much about about the character itself. That's why my least favourite character is Raven from Teen Titans, even though I love her to bits. It's terribly easy to fall into stereotypes with her, because even the show is a little guilty of that sometimes. And getting the balance between getting the character right and getting a paper cut out makes me want to tear out my hair. So that makes her my least favourite character to write.

10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!

Hmmm, I'm not too sure what counts as weird when writing about shinigami and superheroes. I'd originally thought writing about superheroes turning into kids counts, but then there was an actual episode where the Justice League turned into kids! So I have to officially state a "dunno" on this.

Or you know, write "everything" as an answer. =D As proven by this meme where I accepted the most ludicrous prompts it is safe to say I HAVE NO SHAME.

9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.

Uh. Um. I don't really write OCs. BUT if forced at gunpoint, I would say that my OCs come as a result of plot, not as a driver of plot. What that means is that I'd develop the bare bones of the story first, complete with themes, and then pick and choose characters that would help bring across those themes.

Long example under cut )

As you can see, it's a pretty painful process, which is why I tend not to create OCs. At least in fanfic, I can leap into the stories I want to tell without the hassle of creating characters. It's like playing with a ready made dollhouse, instead of creating my own out of Lego.

Time for the first round up post of DUN DUN! THE ART CHALLENGE~ What surprises do we have this week?

The contenders! In the right corner, with the most words from the last challenge, it's Lunar Eclipse. What dazzling tale of a partnership between a Hollow and his boy can we tell? What's this we hear? We're writing about Neliel? How exciting!

But in the left corner! Not thought about for 5 years, for a fandom that was successfully concluded in three seasons, it's the Avatar the Last Airbender bodyswap fic. Who's getting swapped with whom? Only Zuko knows, because Aang is out of it! With only one main character awake, what sort of victory can this fic achieve?

The outcome of the match? We find Lunar Eclipse with 201 words, and bodyswap fic with a whooping 2,012 words!!! Bodyswap fic is the WINNER!

HOW WAS THIS POSSIBLE? Let us examine bodyswap fic to find out!

How about the fact that 1,133 words of the bodyswap fic was written in one day?

Or that Zuko makes for a really cooperative pov character, when he's not freaking out?

The power of writing in the posting window of a dw is not to be underestimated either!

Amazing! That means a total of 2,212 words has been written, with an average of 368 words a day! What's this? There's another winner? Oh, it's ME? 368 words a day means I've exceeded my target of 200 words! Amazing!

Can this feat be repeated next week? Will Zuko continue to cooperate? Will Aang wake up? Will I stop ending sentences in exclamation marks and question marks? TUNE IN NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT!

8. What's your favorite genre to write? To read?

Fantasy hands down. There's just something really interesting about people with powers or magic that makes me want to write about them, even if they're doing perfectly ordinary things. But the possibility of writing about the extraordinary always attracted me. It's probably why superheroes are my second favourite thing to write. I wonder what they count as - fantasy or sci-fi?

Likewise, I love to read fantasy, with sci-fi a very very close second. Although sci-fi tends to get grouped under fantasy sometimes! This is closely followed by mysteries, which I've always wanted to write but never got around to. Maybe someday I will.

(In contrast, I HATE romances and rarely read them, but it's where my writing goes to. Go figure.)

7. Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?

Sometimes, depending on whether I need music to recreate a mood, and especially when it's a song that inspired the fic in the first place. You can seen that a lot in my early fic, where at the end of the fic I would put a link to the piece of music that influenced the work, so that you can listen while reading.

I don't usually listen while writing - I'd listen to the song enough times on repeat so that I get the feel, and then turn it off to write. This prevents me from breaking the flow when I've decided that one song on repeat has gotten irritating enough.

But if I need music in the background, I will surround the song with other songs of similar "feel" so that I can play the songs on repeat and shuffle, so that I don't get irritated so fast.

Aino says that I like anything with a beat, so that's the type of music that I choose for my writing. I have to like the song enough to subject myself to it! I don't tend to assign specific genres of music to stories though.

As for image songs for characters, I don't usually have them since my songs are meant to capture the feel of a certain aspect of the fic. Having said that, I do have some, although they're usually contributed by other people. For example, I have Vienna Teng's The Tower firmly pegged as a Rukia image song because of someone's FST.

5. By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?

6. Where are you most comfortable writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol' pen and paper?

Based on sheer familiarity, the place I am most comfortable writing is in my bedroom on my laptop. I've used that laptop at this desk for... about 6 years now, and have written the most fics on it. It's a good place to write because I have the internet for research and fics, chat with people when I want it, and music when it's needed.

I don't have a specific time of date I sit down to write. Personally I prefer the mornings when I'm not as tired out, but since I tend to be working at that time I write at night instead. Sometimes I will write on the train - it's dead time where there's not much else to do, and I know the route by heart.

I've written the most fic on the computer, since I have to prep the fic for posting on lj or dw anyway. The muse hasn't shown any particular pref, since I almost exclusively wrote on pen and paper during school, and lately I also have been writing on my handphone. Multiple mediums can be a blessing!

As I said in Day 4, I try not to remember anything about my first few years of writing. However, since I liked to write characters that mirrored my age, it's a pretty safe bet that my youngest character is probably 6. I don't believe I ever wrote about any toddlers. My oldest OC is probably the immortal, although I don't know how old he is because I didn't go and calculate (centuries probably).

I don't know which is the first character I created, because it's that far in my past. But my latest OC is an office lady, because that's what I am now. XD She's probably in her late twenty or early thirties, at the most.

Oh man, do I have to? To be honest, I can't remember and I don't want to find out. My first few stories were all narrations while I was playing with my toys - I would record the story and act out the actions with my toys at the same time. My parents STILL have the tapes - they think it's cute, but I find it embarrassing.

My first story in written form was when I was in primary school. I don't remember those either, because my teacher loved to pick my stories to read to the class, which I found embarrassing. I was already a nerd - now I had to be a teacher's pet too? The teachers would make us sit on the floor for these readings, and I would make sure to sit myself in the middle so I could stare at my knees, stick my fingers in my ears and go la la la so I couldn't hear my story being read.

I was a very easily embarrassed kid.

My first story for fandom was a Sailor Moon fanfic, which of course involved a Mary Sue. It was written in, bizarrely, a mix of English and Chinese, the latter because it was the language I watched Sailor Moon in. It explored the possibilities of other heavenly bodies having Sailor Soldiers, and when canon started to go into that too I stopped writing it. I still have the notebooks (which were appropriately Sailor Moon themed) but don't remember the order they were supposed to be read in.

And much much later on, I published my first fanfic in the Harry Potter fandom - a strange little story about the story of Tom Riddle mirrored to that of the Gingerbread Man. Yeah, I'm weird. =)

3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?

Let me tell you a secret - I'm really bad with names.

No, seriously. I have no naming fu at all. It was so bad when I was young I used to write fic involving my friends because I had no idea how to name characters outside of names in my immediate vicinity. When my friends told me that was embarrassing, I would name my characters Boy A and Girl B and then dig for names later. One of my favourite methods to do that - watching credits. I picked up a lot of interesting (and strange!) names that way. My dad's a teacher, so I used to steal his class register to read too. My favourite name to date: Siobhan Fury.

Even now, I still have to dig up a baby name book/site before I come up with a name. When I choose names, I go by two criteria - meaning and initials. Meaning is pretty easy - I try to find a meaning that would suit an identifying (though not always key) trait of the character. Then I go by initials - I like some combinations of letters better than others, and have a weakness for A - G for first names, and C for surnames.

Places are a lot harder - I try to rely on real world settings where I can, and cool sounding words when I can't. Part of the reason why I don't write sci-fi I guess - I have a hard time making up words!

2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?

To be honest, I don't keep track. My OCs tend to be organic - I create as many of them as I need for the writing and rarely count them. But if I had to, off the top of my head I have 15 OCs that I've really spent energy on, and 3 that I have thought about lately.

My preference for male/female OCs went through an evolution actually! When I was younger, I loved the Famous Five/Secret Seven setup that I was very careful with the gender mix of my characters. So there would always be about equal numbers of boys and girls where possible, and if I had an odd number there would be one more boy. Then I went to a girls school and my main characters all became female because it was simply the most common interaction around me. Now that I'm working things have evened out again, although I tend towards more females now because I want to see more of them in writing.

Funnily, for fanfic it's been the exact opposite of the evolution. I was mainly in shojo fandoms when I was at my girls school, so the characters I wrote about were males. Then I moved on to ensemble shows, so things have evened out a bit to maybe 55:45 in favour of males, depending on how narrowly I define the focus group of characters.

[personal profile] tenebris did this really cool meme - 30 days of writing that I've been checking out. I thought it might be fun if I did it too!

The meme )

And to kick off the meme proper, here's question 1:
Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you've worked with and why.

To be honest, I haven't played in a particular verse long enough as I usually prefer one-shots, and the only one I've constantly revisited isn't even mine, it's [personal profile] tenebris' Covert verse. But if I had to choose one verse out of all the backstories/worldbuilding that I've dreamed up of for my one-shots, it's the Three-Quarters of a Dark Moon verse. The idea of a voluntary Ichigo-Hollow Ichigo partnership tickled me ever since I wrote this 31_days drabble a few years ago, and spinning it out (in an IchiRuki way) into Three-Quarters, and then Tube of Love was fun.

But that's also why I want to get Lunar Eclipse - where Hollow Ichigo challenges Rukia on who has the right to be Ichigo's partner! - written, because I want to draw the two ideas together. I guess it's the potential of this verse that keeps me coming back, because canon!Ichigo is so adament that all his Hollow wants to do is eat him that a non-antagonistic relationship between them is nigh possible. But isn't the what-ifs what fic is for?

I do have a couple of original fic ideas - right now the one with an immortal and a reincarnating better half is the one dominating my brain, but I haven't written a single word of it. It's a fun story to spec when I want to do something easy though.

And now to put the above into practice! [personal profile] tenebris, [livejournal.com profile] hallowd and I did a challenge called the TAR challenge earlier this year, in which we set daily word counts and tried to meet them. We had so much fun encouraging each other to meet those daily word counts that we decided to do it again! Only this time, we're calling it the ART challenge - still the same old initials, but only in a nicer order =)

For the TAR challenge, I set 100 words a day, which I met easily. So this time round for the ART challenge I'll be making an attempt to write 200 words a day. Admittedly I'm a little busier this time, but I don't think it would be much of a problem. I'll report in weekly, probably Saturdays, so you know which fic the 200 daily words are going to.

Right! See you tomorrow with the 200 words and another quesiton of the writing meme then!
