After Homura steps out of the hospital, she finds that she is afraid. She is afraid of her empty new apartment. She is afraid of her classmates, who are always talking about her. Later, she is afraid of the witches, who are dangerous and frightening.
Madoka is Homura's only support against all of Homura's fears. She befriends Homura, so she doesn't feel alone or have to listen to the people who talk about her. She protects Homura from witches.
When Homura turns back time, she finds her apartment, classmates and witches no long scare her. Madoka gave her that strength.
