Content Notes: Just because you’re on the sidelines doesn’t mean you’re not a fighter. Spoilers up to episode 10.

Homura turns up for every single witch fight.

"You don't have to," Madoka tells her, when Homura arrives at a dead run that had her braids banging against her back. Homura stumbles to a halt, looks around and realises that she is too late. The witch and its barrier are gone. Madoka, self-conscious, releases her transformation to fit in better with her surroundings.

Homura colours, and misunderstands. "I know you have to protect me when I’m here," she says in a small voice, made even smaller by how out of breath she is. "If I contracted..."

"That's not what I meant, Homura-chan!" As health representative, Madoka has had to calm a number of upset students, so she knows what to do. She takes Homura’s hands, and figures out what to say.

“Even when you’re not here,” she begins. “I can still fight the witch.”

She is close enough that she can see the confusion in Homura’s eyes, so she tries to explain better. “When I fight witches, I think of all the people I have to protect. You, Mama, Papa, little Tatsuya-chan, Sayaka, all the people in school and in this town, make me want to fight harder. So Homura-chan, you don’t have to come to every fight. You’re already with me.”

Madoka finishes, feeling pretty proud of her speech. It only makes Homura bow her head.

Oh no oh no! Madoka almost misses Homura’s explanation as she mentally berates herself for being so insensitive.

“I’m not as brave as you, I can’t fight for everyone… so the least I can do is support all the amazing things you are doing, from the sidelines… is that ok?”

Madoka can’t help but pull Homura into a hug. “That’s fine. I want to fight witches -- I’ll fight them so you don’t have to.”

Homura watches as Madoka follows Miki Sayaka track down a familiar. It is not surprising; she followed Tomoe Mami into witch barriers as well. She doesn’t have to ask Madoka what the appeal is. (Homura understands, even it was timelines, lifetimes ago.)

It’s fine. Even if Homura wanted to be the one with Madoka's support, it’s fine. Miki Sayaka needs the support more than Homura does.

It’s Homura’s turn to fight witches so Madoka doesn’t have to.
