I should be studying but I started reading Madoka Magica - The Different Story because I saw some good scans. Here are some non-spoilery and spoilery reactions.
- I vote Madoka for best girl. I UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL HOMURA. LET'S FORM A FANCLUB.
- Seriously, BEST GIRL. SHE UNDERSTANDS EVERYONE. SHE KNOWS WHAT TO SAY TO REACH OUT TO YOUR DEEPEST INSECURITIES.
- Re-framing my view of Mami and Kyouko as the dutiful older sister who hates her duty and the rebellious younger sister, they are jealous of each other but also love each other to death. It's like Practical Magic!
- Does that make Homura the middle sister then?
- CRYING. CRYING. THAT ENDING.
AND SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT. STOOOOOOOP if you don't want spoilers.
- Seriously, it's a good thing that timeline failed, because otherwise it would have been TOO TRAGIC FOR WORDS. I am glad Madokami vetoed that one.
- I think Madoka's wish was to "Save Sayaka from the witch that she was fighting." In which case, she was saving Sayaka from ever TURNING into her own witch, and that's why Sayaka felt like all the things that were troubling her before she witched out were not important anymore. On one hand, cool. On the other hand, SCARY. That's like, brain-washing right there.
- As for how Sayaka fits into the sister hierachy, I would think she and Kyouko are the identical twins, with Sayaka as the younger, and that's why she and Kyouko fight all the time but Sayaka gets to be the baby of the family, with Kyouko not really sure how to act as an older sister in this case?
- I'm not sure where Madoka fits into that family relationship though. The second oldest???
- I totally get why Sayaka always witches out though. I didn't like it because it sounded cheap, but it works in-story. She builds her perception of "what magic girl me should be" on top of false expectations about her own personality, and has to go through a period of self-loathing to realign her view of herself. The only thing is... IN THE MADOKA MAGICA WORLD, MAGIC GIRLS DO NOT GET TO SURVIVE A PERIOD OF SELF-LOATHING.
- This makes me want to write the "magic girls can revert from being witches" verse, because then I get why Sayaka would stay half-human half-witch - she doesn't want to hide all the ugly sides to her, and has indeed ACCEPTED them. I just want to write all the magic girls maturing...
- One way to get Kyouko to stop from suiciding with Sayaka is to put Mami in enough danger that she is willing to live on. Guess that's why she's still hanging around in the future verse then.
- Another thing I didn't like when reading the summary was that I thought Mami killing herself is pointless. Upon reading, it makes story-sense. Kyouko promised that they would be reunited. Now that Madoka has relieved Mami of bearing the burden of fighting witches, Mami can fulfil Kyouko's promise. I STILL THINK IT SUCKS.
