Hello everyone! I’m here to finally explain the reason for my long absence: at the end of August, I carted my things halfway across the world to start my studies in Cambridge, UK.
Even though I “moved in” to my college room on 30 August, I’m still in the process of settling down. I hung out with my parents a lot, and then my whole family went to London for a week. Now I’m getting integrated with the community, and developing my own rhythm of doing things. This is my first time living on my own, and I have had to make changes to accommodate this change! =)
A couple of things that I learned:
- Cambridge is a beautiful place.
I might be biased because this particular weekend, I had lovely weather. Just look at this.

In addition, I was walking around the colleges, which are pretty historic. Most colleges come with their own chapel complete with stain glass and gorgeous pictures. These photos are of my favourite chapel. I’m not a member of this college though.

- I actually like walking.
Today I walked from 11am to 2pm, and I only took a short break in my room in between. I actually walked from one end of Cambridge to another, and back again. I’m rather proud of myself. Of course, then I’m going to spoil my record by being an indoor person tomorrow, and burying myself in the intricacies of laundry. And maybe some banking business.
- Maintaining an entire college room is a lot harder than maintaining my own bedroom
I’ve never had to maintain my own bathroom, and I’m not used to it. Especially since it turns out that I’m quite sensitive to hair in the bathroom. I try to pick up after bathing and brushing my hair, but there’s just so much of it! Not to mention that wet hair has to be the worse texture ever.
I've also had some weird dreams.
I have always been a lucid dreamer. In my dreams, I know what is going on, and sometimes I can manipulate the dream to fit what I want. What I’ve noticed since coming to Cambridge is that my dreams have become a lot more vivid here. That caused me to have the most Inception type dream I’ve had in a while.
I had fallen asleep for the second time at 4am when I started dreaming. In my dream, I was in a train sitting next to my mom. My dad was dozing off in a seat a few rows down in the carriage. Since the journey would take a long time, I took out a magazine to read. “This would be good reading material for my trip to see my Oxford friend,” dream me thought.
Conscious me, at these trigger words, had a minor heart attack. Wait, wasn’t my trip to see my Oxford friend today? And wasn’t the bus leaving at 6am?
I decided to wake up and check the clock. But I was pretty deep asleep, and the dream actually held. As in, the dream continued on despite my knowledge that I needed to wake up. It was bizarre.
So I started to think about methods of waking up. As I thought about this, the train turned into a bus, which was a lot easier to get off from. I told dream mom I forgot something, and hopped off the bus. And I still didn’t wake up.
Don’t panic, I told myself. Why don’t you picture how you fell asleep. Picture your pyjamas and your sleep position… hey were my blankets on or off?
Off, I decided, because I was feeling a bit cold. And that was the trigger that caused my college room to come rushing in. Where someone was patting my hand in a reassuring manner.
I immediately sat up and checked who it was. I gathered that the figure there was supposed to be my dad, but there were some details that were just wrong, though I couldn’t tell you what those details were right now. I was about to tell the person that it wasn’t my dad –
When this time I actually woke up. I was alone in my bed, and when I sat up the clock read 6am. It was the day before I had to leave to visit my Oxford friend.
Now I’m sitting at a computer typing this. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a dream that had layers like this. Or been so immersed in a dream that I had to figure out how to switch my consciousness from my mental world to the physical world. At least I’m awake right now.
Or am I? XD
