Canon: Madoka's Angels verse
Once upon a time there were three beautiful girls who were magic girls, and they were each assigned very hazardous duties of fighting witches or turning into them. But Madoka took them away from all that and now they work for her by keeping in check magical creatures such as vampires, elves, unicorns and of course the in-anime canon magical beasts.
This particular snippet deals with vampires.
Homura knows rationally that she shouldn't be opening doors this late at night with a vampire on the loose, but she is a magic girl. She has been hunting the vampire all this while and can take care of herself. The young girl on the other side, however, is another matter. She can't be more than 7, younger than Yuma even. There's no way she would be able to protect herself against a vampire if he were to think of her as a nice snack.
So Homura opens the door to ask, "What do you want?"
The girl is too busy hiding her face in her hands to answer at first. Homura stands in her own doorway awkwardly. She's not good with children; it's the job of Kyouko and Mami to comfort kids. Homura just hunts supernatural creatures.
Eventually she tries for a soothing pat on the girl's back. Only then does she speak.
"I - I thought I'd look at the stars," she says, her voice sad and slow. "Just for a while. But now I can't get back home. Can you let me stay with you tonight?"
"Do you have a key?"
The girl kept her hands over her face but shook her head.
"Did you ring the doorbell?"
A slow nod this time.
"Let's try again shall we?" She touched her hand to her magic girl ring, and then stepped out of the house. No vampires attacked, so she took the opportunity to lock her door. Then she asked. "Which house is yours?"
The little girl pointed to a flat two doors away. Homura took the girl's outstretched hand by the wrist, and they walked to the door together. With the girl's hand in hers, Homura rang the doorbell.
It chimed somewhere in the depths of the house, but there was no response. There wasn't even a stir at the doorbell being rung. Homura tried the bell once more, then followed up with knocking. Still no response.
In the hand that was not holding on to the little girl, Homura summoned her Soul Gem. It had faint reactions to the presence of humans, although it was nowhere near as accurate as detecting other magic girls, magic beasts, or in the old days before Madoka had made her wish, witches. It was enough to tell whether there was anyone in the house.
Both the house and Homura's Soul Gem remained quiet.
"Do your parents go out often at night?"
"Sometimes..." said the girl.
There were many possibilities. Either the parents were out and safe, or they had been attacked by the vampire outside, and would not be returning. There was also the possibility that they were lying dead inside the house, and Homura ought to break down the door. Whichever situation it was, the problem of the young girl would be best settled in the morning.
"Alright, come with me."
The girl seemed cheered by this, and really let her hand fall away from her face. She was smiling under her bangs, although it was a small and shy smile that didn't show teeth. "Really?"
"Really. We'll settle you in for the night, and we'll figure out what to do the next morning."
The girl actually skipped as Homura led her back to her house. However, she hesitated on the threshold after Homura unlocked the door.
"You can come in," said Homura.
The girl skipped into the house, and tossed off her shoes in the process. She continued straight into the hall in the dark, even though Homura needed to switch on the lights to see. By the time Homura had locked the door and joined the girl in the now lit hall, the girl no longer seemed sad.
"I knew I could rely on you, Nee-san," she said, skipping around the couches.
"Rely on me for? Sit down."
"I knew Nee-san would take me in!"
"I'm not your sister. You shouldn't be so happy. How can you be sure I'm not a dangerous stranger?"
The girl shrugged and sat down on one of Homura's sofas, kicking her legs in front of her. "Because you're the type of girl who protects people."
"Really," said Homura, checking the windows to make sure they were secure.
"Really! I should know, I've seen you fight."
Homura froze. "And where would that be?"
"Why don't you look at me and you'll know."
Homura turned around, her senses heightened from wariness. The girl still looked small and harmless, but her eyes were much old than the rest of her. They were as old as water and as deep, and they were threatening to drown Homura in them.
"You look so surprised," she giggled. "Don't worry, we are alike! Your eyes are much older than the rest of you. The similarity brought me here."
"Who are you?"
"Wrong question! You should ask what I am."
Then the girl smiled, and all Homura could remember after that was sharp teeth.
