I read this on tumblr, and found myself agreeing with it 10000%

"It’s noble to do things for the people you love. Except, the series just spent all of this time showing you how sacrificing yourself for someone else will only cause you to despair. I don’t understand why Miki’s sacrifice is pathetic, while Homura’s sacrifice is honorable. The only real difference is that Homura gets multiple chances. To view Homura in a positive light is to completely disregard an important story arc.
... If you don’t do things for yourself, you lose your identity and independence. To be balanced in a relationship, you need to take as well as give. Homura only gives, and even gets to a point where Madoka doesn’t like her, causing Homura to receive nothing. This makes Homura a doormat. Devoted to Madoka, nothing without her."
This is why I felt the story had to end as it did. Homura has to learn how to live a life without Madoka. She needs to relearn her identity and independence outside of trying to save Madoka, to breathe and live outside of the constraints of her time loop.
(I disagree with the Kyuubey parts however. But that's a rant for another day.)
