Title: send in the clowns
Day/Theme: 19. you're crumpled-up nonsense
Series: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Characters/pairings: Kyouko, Madoka, mentions of Mami
Rating: PG13 for violence
Content Notes: Kyouko hears there’s a new magic girl in town. Spoilers for episode 10, The Different Story, as well as Mami and Kyouko’s past.

Mitakihara is a lot closer to Kasamino than Kyouko would like. Witches don't respect the boundaries of towns, and it's not Kyouko's fault that she occasionally crosses the borders while chasing after a particular witch.

It's a good thing that she does that, otherwise she would never have known about Mami's new protege.

The girl is wearing a dress so pink it puts Kyouko's teeth on edge. She also seems to have fallen for Mami's attitude on hunting witches hook, line and sinker. Just watching them fight witches makes Kyouko's blood boil. It's Kyouko's past all over again: fighting witches and familiars without regard to the toll on their Soul Gems, laughing and joking while more serious things are going on, and just generally being so stupid.

It doesn't matter. Kyouko will beat some sense into them if she has to. Mami is a lost cause, but the new girl? She still has a chance.

Kyouko stops the new girl just before she does the very stupid thing of fighting a familiar.

She actually tries to go after it, which Kyouko puts a stop to by placing her spear tip at her thoart. She stares at it in confusion. What a stupid girl.

Kyouko has to eat her words when the newbie says, "I don't want to fight you."

So Mami had gotten around to telling the kid about turf wars already. "Good, don't do stupid things and I won't have to." Kyouko stabs the butt of her spear into the ground. "Let the familiar become a witch, and then you'll get a grief seed out of it."

The new girl stares at her. "That's horrible!" she exclaims. "That - that means that the familiar would harm people."

"Yeah, that's exactly how it works. Witches eat humans, and us magic girls eat witches. Don't you know your food chain?" Kyouko levels a stare at her. "Or maybe you're the kind of soft hearted person who wastes her wish on saving animals."

Kyouko had researched this, just to be sure that she'll be able to hit home with her remarks. Sure enough, the newbie goes still.

Kyouko doesn't expect her to reply, "Isn't it the same as being a magic girl?"

It shocks Kyouko enough that she doesn't have a response ready, so the girl continues, "I saw the cat was in danger, so I saved it. As a magic girl, when I see people in danger from witches, I save them. Isn't that what we become magic girls for?"

"No it isn't! We become magic girls because we're stronger than everyone else! Why should we care about those who are weak?"

"I'm not stronger than everyone else," says the newbie. "Before I could use my magic to fight witches, I was weak and useless. Now I've found strength by saving people from witches."

Just talking to her made Kyouko angry. "Well, if you're so strong, then you won't mind if I beat some sense into you!"

The newbie let out a rather girly shriek as Kyouko stabbed her spear at her and made her jump clear. But she was also smart - she focused on putting distance between hereself and Kyouko, which would allow her to use her bow.

But Kyouko had a few tricks up her sleeve. She breaks her spear into segments, and launches it after the girl.

The newbie was quick and dodged again, but she still did not draw her weapon. "We're both magic girls!" she reasoned. "Why should we fight each other?"

"Maybe I just don't like the look of your face!" This time, Kyouko manages to nick the other's arm. "Come on, fight me!"

The girl is stubborn. "I don't want to!"

Kyouko really loses it, and this time she strings the newbie up, tying her in place with chains. The girl struggles, but she can't break free. Kyouko's magic is strong. "You're so weak!" she taunts.

The newbie actually sags, and says, "I know."

This girl keeps surprising Kyouko. Kyouko doesn't know whether to be impressed, or think she's stupid.

"I'm new to being a magic girl, and witches frighten me sometimes. But... I want to be someone that Mami-san can rely on. And that means fighting witches and familiars, even if they frighten me. I believe what Mami-san says about saving people. I want to save people with her too."

Stupid stupid stupid. They all were so stupid.

The newbie lets out a surprised yelp when Kyouko dispels her spear and lets her drop to the ground. "Believe in your nonsense, if you want," Kyouko says. It takes too long to beat sense into idiots, and Mami needs all the back-up she can get.

The other girl struggles to her feet, then asks, "Who are you?"

Well, Mami would hear of this anyway. "Sakura Kyouko."

She nods. "I'm Kaname Madoka."

So the idiot had a name. "Now that you know who I am, think over what I've said," says Kyouko, and turns on her heel. She'll leave Madoka and Mami to their nonsense.
