Note: for the next three questions I'll be answering this in terms of the series I write fanfic for, as opposed to characters in my own stories.
The easier answer would be Rukia from Bleach, but as you all know she's my favourite character to write, so that would be just repeating myself. Instead I'll talk about Harry Potter and how he captured the imagination of myself (and plenty of my friends).
At first, I didn't want to read the Harry Potter series - I thought it was overhyped. But then my parents borrowed the books and I thought oh well, since it's in the house I may as well give it a try. I nearly threw the first book out after the first chapter - I was quite honestly bored by all the nattering about The Boy Who Lived. (This proved to be the tone in the later books but I was too far gone to care. XD) And then we switched to Cinderella-Harry and I was hooked.
Why is the Harry Potter of the first few books my favourite protangonist? Well, it's because he's not exactly your typical hero. He's smarter than most heroes, though not exactly studious - that's why we have Hermione, but he does learn spells that are useful to him, and keeps them in mind. (This is before he became the one trick pony. EXPELLIARMUS!) He doesn't get everything he wants - he still has to return to the Dursleys at the end of the yeare. He's got a little deviousness in him - SLYTHERIN! (And I still hate JK for not exploiting that. Sigh.)
Above all, in the first few books, he's got Potential. He's The Boy Who Lived - he could do a lot of world-sweeping, if he really put his mind into it. He's Tom Riddle gone good. He doesn't have to restrict himself to just killing Voldemort. Unfortunately, he winds up too much a Dumbledore man to do anything different (dammit!) but as far as fic potential goes - GOLDMINE!
Too bad I don't write more HP fanfic, other than the stories for my friends. =)
