This is the Dec edition of prompts from #TimeTravelAuthors on bsky, where my answers are about my crossover fic, a question of time (AO3 link). The numbers are the days in Dec.

Dec 1: Story introduction

"a question of time" is the result when I decided my fave time traveller, Akemi Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, should meet my other fave time traveller, Dave Strider from Homestuck.

( Dec 3 to 7 responses )

Dec 9: Celebrations

While I have written a few birthday celebrations in my main fic "a question of time", I like Christmas so much I wrote a Christmas side story set in the same verse, Orange Crush in a Japanese Xmas set (AO3 link).

Here's a snippet from the side story that refers to Christmas and time manipulation.

“Merry Christmas!” she chirruped, reintroducing English and an overdose of the Christmas spirit to the scene, then planted a big wet kiss on his cheek.

He suppressed his first instinct to squeak and made sure he found his voice before saying in English, “Pretty sure those under the mistletoe are supposed to get kisses, not give kisses.”

“I didn’t know that! They don’t seem to know that, too!”

Despite seeing Dave getting kissed, Sakura let Jade plant a kiss on her cheek, too. Sakura came away with a black kiss mark and a drumstick that she’d sneaked out of the KFC bucket that was tucked in Jade’s arm.

He switched back to Japanese to remind Sakura, “I said I’d give you some, can’t you wait?”

Sakura took a huge bite of her drumstick and wiped at the crumbs and the lipstick mark on her cheek. “Chicken is best when it’s hot. And you should fix your face too.”

He was about to do just that when Homura brought on the black, grey and white Christmas of her time stop. He turned to her with a smirk. “That eager to clean – are you trying to one up Sakura in her chicken heist?”

The monochrome didn’t extend to Homura, which was why he could see the red in her cheeks as she tried to pry the bucket of chicken free without bringing Jade into her time stop. “Having an object to shield with would be – easier than trying to dissuade Harley-san.”

( Dec 11 to 29 )

comments

I still want to do the fic commentary for a question of time (AO3 link), but it's such a major undertaking.

Instead, I've been doing bite-sized prompts from #TimeTravelAuthors on bsky, so I decided to collate the answers in this post.

This is the November edition, I'll back up the December edition another day. The numbers are the days in November.

Nov 1: Story introduction

"a question of time" is a crossover fanfic featuring my two fave time travellers: Akemi Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Dave Strider from Homestuck.

Homura thought she had lost her time travel powers thanks to her best friend's wish. Dave's arrival makes Homura rethink her assumptions.

( Nov 3 to 13 responses )

Nov 15: Anyone running out of time?

( SPOILERS )

Nov 17: Time Travel Direction

Dave Strider uses modified turntables to time travel, so he can both travel forward and backwards in time, and even pause in "time stop".

Here's a snippet of Dave describing the process:

Dave wasn't the kind to go bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. But it was his turn to infuse enough of his power to add his own glow, the light coincidentally taking the shapes of familiar gears. That was how he knew he could send his records spinning.

Instead of time catching on his timetables during a rewind, fast forwarding felt more like a slide, like a skateboard going down a ramp until enough of a time differential had built and speed started to come into things. As long as the board felt like it was under their feet, it should be fine.

( Nov 19 to 27 responses )

Nov 29 was the same promo as the top.

Prompts fully updated! Hope you enjoyed reading!

comments

One last thing before we dive into the fic - I hate writing summaries.

But I think I did a good job with this summary:

(Homestuck-Madoka Magica crossover) On an Earth that seems reset to pre-SBURB normalcy, Dave Strider transfers to Mitakihara. There he finds the magical girl system, more universe breaking powers, and an Akemi Homura all too eager to fix her time abilities with his...

It gets the key elements in - a supposedly pre-SBURB Earth that has a Mitakihara and a Homura, so that Dave can meet her. But how did they get there? You'll have to read the fic.

Which you can do too, with commentary! In this part, I'll be swapping the fic commentary to be in blockquotes, with the main fic as the actual text.

If you prefer to read the version of "a question of time" without commentary, it is here on AO3.

( Here's the commentary laden version )

Next chapter to be commented on!

In the meantime, you can check out the previous Part 3.
Did you know that a question of time (link goes to the fic on AO3) was supposed to be entirely in Bro Strider's POV?

I blame this on coming across the kancho entry of Gaijin Smash while I was mainlining Homestuck. As I was reading, I had the undeniable thought in my head - if Bro Strider was a JET teacher, he would be immune to all this.

The idea just stuck in my head and wouldn't leave, and then grew an entire verse. I didn't know much about Japanese schools, but I could steal Mitakihara schools right?
It's been 13 years and an epic fic since I watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica, so it's time to revisit the series. Specifically how the years since and writing this fic has shifted my view of the series.

At that particular point in my life, I had grown tired enough of most media that I needed spoilers for the entire series before I would even start. I couldn't take the emotional toil of having a comfort series turn out not to be so comforting at all. I thought I would be pretty safe with PMMM. It was only 12 episodes and I already knew the major plot twists (including episode 3).

I also had a gateway character in Akemi Homura, and she made it to the end of the series, so I would be fine. Since I don't talk about it often enough - gateway characters for me are my entry point into any media. I need to have stakes in a particular character before I dive in. Homura was everything that spoilers promised and more.

( Spoilers about PMMM )

But then we come to the problem of Dirk Strider. And of Bro Strider.
My thoughts on Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department

    <dw:music>Taylor Swift - I Can Do It With A Broken Heart</dw:music>
    <dw:mood>discontent</dw:mood>
    <dw:security>public</dw:security>
    <dw:reply-count>2</dw:reply-count>

I haven't commented on Taylor Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, because I know it has to come with a lot of backstory and caveats.

The summary of the backstory is this: I have been sitting with various forms of grief since 2019, and you'd think after five years, I know the shape of my grief. I have lived with it for all this time, because I cannot help but be aware of it.

You might want to mock my way of working with it, which is to write an entire novel about a crossover pairing that can probably be distilled down to a single chapter. But I know it's what I needed at the time (and maybe still do now).

That's why while I get some of the critique of The Tortured Poets Department, I cannot mock it. There are certain tracks - Down Bad, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart - that have captured my grief in a way that I never expected anyone to get. And those two tracks alone, for better or for worse, bring me back to my grief.

This is coming from someone who, when she first heard the album, made the complaint that it's too much like Midnights. But even if I don't agree with some of Taylor's sonic decisions, I can respect it. I can't throw stones, given the way I have chosen to express myself via niche fic.

But it's still disheartening to see critique of the album from people who haven't cared to listen to it (because Taylor Swift has a reputation) or who twist it to fit a certain perspective (because Taylor Swift has a reputation). Even if this particular album isn't the shape of their grief (and I genuinely hope that they never experience it), I feel that there isn't enough grace given to allow people to have other experiences, or forms of expression, or even to allow this album to just exist. And that's too bad.

comments

Homestuck's 413 is today and it's almost 13 years to the day that I started watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica. So I thought it was finally time to do the director commentaries on my fic (link goes to AO3) a question of time featuring the crossover pairing of Akemi Homura/Dave Strider. Yes I write their names that way because the way their names are presented in their individual series trumps consistency.

Which is somehow related to the theme of this first part that will not quote the fic yet, despite being a director's commentary! But I think a bit of backstory is needed.

Specifically that my advice is not to get into a series through a fic featuring a crack crossover pairing.

( Come down a rabbit hole with me )

Continued in Part 2 and more!!!

Or check out the fic commentary tag.

comments

I realise I haven't posted on here for so long that I've forgotten how to write long form entries. My last few entries were a bit curt for DW, especially the ones where I was copying bleets from bluesky.

I've been telling the story about how I got into Taylor Swift a lot lately, so I thought I might as well record this here.

My colleague invited me to her wedding, where she had a video about the gatecrash at her house. Part of the tradition of fetching the bride over here is the gatecrash, where the groom has to prove his worth to the bride's family and bridesmaids before he's allowed to take the bride away. This particular wedding had one of the tasks for the groom to sing the bride's favourite song at the time - Our Song by Taylor Swift. The groom hadn't paid enough attention to know the lyrics, but he was rather quick thinking. Since Our Song was about Taylor Swift and things about her dates that she would put into a song, he wrote some lyrics on the fly using the same chords about the things about his dates with the bride.

While the happy ending to that story is that the groom successfully charmed the bride for her to agree he passed the task, this is more of a prelude to my story. Thanks to that video, I was tempted to look up the original version of Our Song. Taylor Swift did a good job, but it was too cutesy for me. I went to check out the rest of her Youtube channel...

Thanks to the wedding happening around the time of the release of Fearless, I found the songs Tim McGraw and Love Story. Both blew me away and cemented me as a fan. Fearless was one of the albums I loaded up on my then mp3 player and played the tracks of repeatedly. I've been a fan ever since.

I probably will elaborate on the other entries I made about Taylor Swift at some point. I'm also toying with some entries about my latest fic.

comments

I had wanted to watch Moana, but due to a busier December in 2016 than I expected I didn't manage to escape to the movies until about 26 December. It happened to be a public holiday so there were a lot of kids watching, but since I was alone I managed to score a pretty good seat in the theatre despite buying a ticket just before the movie started.

It was completely worth it, both from a story angle and also from a personal angle. See, Moana was the movie that I wish Mulan had been like.

Some context first - Mulan is a story that is pretty personal to me. It's a childhood story told to me by my mother, and one of the key parts of the story is that Mulan's father saw that she was trained in the same skills as her brother. That was why Mulan decided to take her father's place in the war, and was more than capable of taking her father's place in the war.

Disney Mulan took her father's place in the war because she was rebelling against society's place for her, and she was definitely not capable.

( Spoilers about Moana will tell you more )

THE WHOLE SOUNDTRACK THOUGH. I advise going to see the movie first, but after the movie, I kept listening to the entire Moana album on Spotify and crying my eyes out EACH TIME. EVEN NOW.

GO WATCH MOANA, AND THEN LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACK.

comments

I can't believe I forgot I was backing this up!

Summary:(Star Trek and Zootopia crossover) Judy Hopps doesn't do diplomacy.
Neolithic Revolution
by Ali Shapiro

I'm tired of the way love turns us into animals.
I'm tired of roaring. I'm tired of you tearing
my flesh with your teeth, stalking me like prey
in the shower, lunging and growling; I'm tired
of pawing, and panting, and hunting
and wagging. Of course at first it was thrilling. The we
have no words for this. The we are just
our bodies. But look at my cortex. Look
at my opposable thumbs. I want out
of this stew, I want to use tools, I want to develop
agriculture and walk upright towards you through
this field of corn that we planted, on purpose, because
we were hungry, and human, and knew
exactly what we were doing.

comments

I think it's important to have days like this, away from the grind of the real world to fill one's head with other things.

Aka reader, I took leave again to watch a movie. I think it's pretty worth it. Despite rushing to the cinema from office, the contrast of the day is pretty important too. I went from a busy real world day to the no less quick but also important world of Kubo and the Two Strings.

I think an important part about animation is when you forget that you're watching an animation. Kubo goes into the realm of Nightmare Before Christmas - a world disjointed from the current one that we live in, but by the end you have bought into it.

( Spoilery details on the movie )

I admit that I was initially iffy heading into the ending as I read spoilers that it did not do narrative justice to Kubo. Far from it. I think we are just so used to stories where the hero dons armour and gains a sword and fights that we feel not getting this sort of story is a cop out.

But Kubo has never been that sort of hero. All this while, we see his strengths has been his lute, his imagination and his capacity to love. That's why his weapon is not armour and sword.

( More spoilers )

I also think the important moral to me is that I should not put on an armor and take up the sword because that is what other people expect. I think it is more important to string my lute and play on, as unconventional as it may be.

In conclusion: WATCH THE MOVIE. So worth it!

comments

I continue to be horrible at updating things. This was posted on AO3 on 9 August, and updated on 15 August. And now it's finally here.

Summary:(Star Trek and Zootopia crossover) Nick knows the rules in Communications, including this unwritten one: never get attached to Away teams. But Ensign Judy Hopps from Security keeps making it back. Missing her check in with Nick just doesn't happen.

Until it does. Now it's up to Nick and the starship crew led by Captain Bogo to bring their Away team back.

Rating: T
Genre: Gen
Warnings for: The potty mouths of foxes, STAGGERING LEVELS OF COMPETENCY
Disclaimer: If I owned both Star Trek AND Zootopia, I would be paying other people to write this.

( washing what you know out to sea )

( A conversation coda.
I've convinced myself that the more something matters to me, the harder it is for me to talk about it. I'm sure you all have realised that I'm pretty tangled up in Zootopia since I saw it on March 17. I've actually held back on writing about it because I thought it would be too hard to put into words.

But I went back to flip through what I wrote the day after, and... it's actually pretty coherent. Some edits to the reaction for flow:

( OTP squee under the cut )

So it's probably BS that I can't write reactions immediately. Especially because Nick the Snickers bar is a comparison that is GOLD and would never have occurred to me now. Even if it's true. I should totally write more immediate reactions.

The only thing I have to add is that since the movie, I've dedicated 79,528 (published) words as variations on the above theme, which I should really catch up on updating. I have more waiting in the wings! This OTP gets me so hard that I have to keep exploring it through fic.

comments

I'm sorry I had to.

I admit that I was nervous about this movie from watching the trailers, especially since it seemed to highlight THE ENTERPRISE CRASHES. What this movie failed to tell me that the Enterprise was cracked to reveal the heart within the body - the crew that drives the ship.

What we learned from this: EVERYONE IS COMPETENT AND BEAUTIFUL AND I AM IN FUCKING LOVE WITH ALL OF THEM

( Things I liked with no particular order or coherency.
