Dream dream dream

I had a friend complain that I don't write about my dreams often enough, and last night I had a dream that made me sit up and take notice. It features rite of passages, shifting of POV character halfway through the dream, and perhaps too many peeks into my id.

I was in a city by the sea, and apparently a rite of passage on whether or not you get to stay in the city was having to do a personalised test. Apparently I was some sort of immigrant, and so I was doing this test pretty late. Most people did this test in their teens.

Since it was some hush hush activity, I reported to the tester expecting something extremely onerous. The tester told me I had overall two hours to finish the entire test. He also told me that the first part was just to run two laps, and I was allowed to decide my route. I was really horrible at running, but I wanted my test to have some sort of significance, so I started out from my test centre and did a figure of 8, one half around the rock pool overlooking the sea, and the other half around the test centre itself. I was running really slowly though, and I got so winded half way that I started to worry I wouldn't have enough time to finish the run. But when I asked my tester if I had enough time, he said that I'd only taken half an hour, and I should be fine.

By the time I finished the first lap, the tester had been changed to a girl about my age. And then, because my brain decided that the girl had to be the female love interest, the POV character in my dream changed into always-a-guy. So while I was wondering at the gender switch, the character I was following was asking the new lady tester what should he do? And the tester said that she liked him so much that he was going to get an automatic pass for her section, no questions asked. She even tried to convince my character that he shouldn't finish his second lap.

But me-as-the-guy was feeling very guilty about having things so easy, so I requested to at least run through the finish line. And my lady tester was so excited by my eagerness that she set the start of the "second lap" pretty far away. Unfortunately, even as a guy I was pretty crap at running, and so was only just running past a supermarket when the buzzer sounded: my two hours were up. And because I wasn't at the finish line at the end of the 2 hours, I was not going to be accepted into the city.

The lady tester was extremely distressed, because it was her fault that I didn't get into the city. I was upset to, since I really wanted to stay in the city and be with the lady tester. Unfortunately, the gender shenanigans had finally gotten to me, and I woke up.

The only accurate thing about this dream is I am really that shitty a runner. A combination of a previously injured knee and suspected respiratory problems does have that effect.
